John Akeroyd - Chairman, UDC Consortium

John Akeroyd has had a long career in Libraries and Universities in the UK where he ran a mixture of services including information, documentation and learning services as well as publishing enterprises. He was Director of the Library Information Technology Centre which provided research and evaluation services to the library sectors as well as being involved in multiple UK and European Research Projects. He was previously Chair of the UK MARC user group and a member of Book Industry Communication (BIC).

For the past decade, John has been established as a consultant in information and related matters to public and not for profit organisations well as being an Honorary Research Fellow at University College London (UCL). His work has been as diverse as: implementing Web Content Management systems and social media; management of IM programmes and projects; implementing digitisation systems; digital training programmes; information staff management and team building. He is a member of the CIBER Research Group and has worked on a strategic review of the international ISSN center in Paris, a data analysis of UK Health Libraries and has the Legal Deposit of Emerging Formats on behalf of the British libraries. He has a long standing interest in eBooks and has written and presented many papers on this theme since about 2000 as well as being Chair of the Annual EBooks conference held at UCL. His current interests are in discovery systems, discoverability and semantic enhancement.

John has degrees in Electronic Engineering, in Information and Library Studies and an MPhil from City University in information seeking in online systems.
