Application for a licence to distribute, publish, translate or use a UDC product

The content of the Universal Decimal Classification is the copyright of the UDC Consortium (UDCC) and the formal permission of the UDCC is needed to reproduce any parts of the UDC, including translation.

The UDCC is committed to supporting other bodies who wish to make it easier for users to access, understand or use the UDC, and also UDC products that are of greatest value to them, whether in the original language edition or in translations and whatever the extent of reproduction.

However, to safeguard the intellectual property in the UDC and the contributions made by UDCC members to maintain the UDC, the UDCC is committed also to take action against any party that reproduces UDC material without proper permission.

Such permission is an automatic right of an Executive Member of the Consortium, and the UDCC will review applications for licences from others who wish to supply UDC products to their own communities or make use of existing UDC products. The terms of each licence are intended to protect the interests of the UDCC and licensees and they also aim to ensure that each licence is exclusive and, therefore, that no two licences overlap.

If you wish to distribute copies of an existing UDC publication, produce your own copies, translate existing publications into another language, create your own editions of UDC or use the UDC within your own application, then you need to complete an Application Form for a Licence and send it to:

A licence is normally issued for an initial period of at least 1 year, and payment for at least one year must be completed in advance. Each licence is renewable annually. Payment in advance for longer periods attracts a discount. For fully detailed information see our guidance on licences .

Contact us if you wish to discuss different arrangements to the ones illustrated above.

The UDCC will review your application and, if approved, will send you two copies of the appropriate licence for you to sign, plus an invoice. You must sign both copies of the licence and return them to us for our signature. You must also make your payment.

When we have received your payment, we will countersign both copies of your licence and send one to you. We will retain the other copy. We will also send you the latest edition of the UDC as output from the UDC database known as the Master Reference File (MRF) in either ISO 2709 format or ASCII text format (or both). Similarly, when we receive your renewal fee each year we will send you a copy of the latest updated MRF.

Associate Members of the UDC Consortium are eligible for a discount on the cost of a licence.

If you think it will help us to understand your application, please feel free to supply additional information and attach it to your application.
