Translations
(currently online: 31 languages)The UDC scheme has been published for over one hundred years and there are translations in existence in 40 languages (read more). Some of these are very brief abridged editions of up to 2,000 classes that have been published for some time, such as the Turkish, Esperanto, Bahasa and Icelandic editions. Others are extensive full editions with over 200,000 classes, such as the German edition, which ceased to be updated in the 1980s. Now that the UDC Summary database has been created, we are able to merge many translations of an up to date abridged scheme and can make this widely available for training and use.
The international community and publishers worldwide are invited to contribute. Texts we receive will require updating, editing editing, and proofreading. As the availability of a free online UDC summary in a national language will benefit librarians and library schools, many colleagues have already volunteered to help and contribute. We extend this invitation for contributions to all colleagues interested in having the UDC Summary represented in their language to help coordinate or help with data input or translation. Translator
If anyone would like to assist in the translation of the UDC Summary we can provide a spreadsheet with a list of classes and captions in English. If you have data available in electronic format we can align a text extract with the UDC Summary and prepare a spreadsheet for further work. We also have an online UDC Summary translator and in coordination with editors for particular language we provide login and pw for collaborators on a specific language.
