VINITI's report on its UDC Activities

The All-Russian Scientific and Technical Information Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences - VINITI has undertaken extensive work on the extension of UDC for application in Russia, collaborating with all relevant organizations, libraries and information specialists. As a result more than 150 organizations have subscribed to UDC publications.

In 2000 the attention was principally focussed on the preparation of Russian translations of UDC publications and their distribution in Russia and CIS countries. This has resulted in:

  • Preparation for the dissemination of the following publications:
    • Universal Decimal Classification (abridged version)
    • Extensions and Corrections to the UDC Class 3 Social-Economic Sciences ·

  • The first volume of a new UDC edition is being prepared for publication. It will include Common auxiliary tables and Class 0. The Russian full edition of UDC tables is expected to be published in 2001

  • Some work has been done on the preparation of the Russian electronic UDC version. This project was started as soon as VINITI became a full UDCC member

  • Also under preparation at the moment is the second UDC volume. It will include Class 2 Religion. Theology. Unfortunately we did not take part in the discussion on the necessity of the revision of this UDC Class. But we are interested in its revision because the existing one does not meet interests of users in our country

The number of potential users of this Class is expanding quickly in our country. They are: new ecclesiastical enlightenmental institutions of different levels: schools, lyceums, institutes etc. of various confessional affiliations. Historic monasteries and parochial communities have been re-established and restored. The result of this development is an increased demand for religious literature. Also increasing are the demands for application of classification systems to this class and quality requirements. Therefore many people are trying to find alternate variants or their own classification that leads to loss of UDC users. Our comments, remarks and wishes to Class 2 are given in more detail in a separate paper, which has been submitted to Executive Committee members of UDCC

  • We hope that the new UDC Editorial Board and Expert Group will take care of UDC classes' definition for revision and assessment of revision results more seriously. It would be advisable to involve EC UDCC's members in this work. We are ready to share our views on the improvement of UDC tables' quality with Prof. I. McIlwaine, Editor-in-Chief
  • VINITI took an active part in the UDC development within various FID Committees in past and the importance of this work nobody can dispute. This work is supposed to be renewed in cooperation with specialists of other Russian centres in the field of medicine, biology, religion and etc.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Prof. Yu. Arskiy
Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences,
Director of VINITI
